GII Doctoral School 2010 – Ultra Large Scale Systems (ULSS)

GII Doctoral School 2010 – Ultra Large Scale Systems (ULSS)

20 Sep 2010 to 1 Oct 2010, Selva de Fasano, Italy

ULSS Doctoral School - Day 1

I found out about this doctoral school from my supervisor (Ian Sommerville) and decided to attend as I'm part of the UK’s Large Scale Complex IT Systems Initiative, which is also interested in the problems of developing and maintaining ULSS. I’m going to keep my notes as daily blog posts in case anyone is interested out there...

Today's proceedings started with Augusto Garuccio who gave the opening speech and a short welcome, mentioning that the main aim of the school is to introduce a new research field to the students and support students in establishing their research networks that can lead to future collaborations.

Gianni Conte (President of the Gruppo Ingegneria Informatica or the GII) gave an overview of the doctoral school and the line-up for the next 2 weeks. He mentioned that the GII has been organising these doctoral schools since 1996 and this year the main sponsors are Telecom Italia and CINI, but other sponsors include IBM, DAISY-Net and LORAN.

Francesco D'Angelo (from Telecom Italia) gave on overview of their company, which is Italy's biggest communications and ISP provider – both for wired and mobile networks – and mentioned that they are interested in how the cloud will change the future of their business.

The school includes lectures from top researchers in this area and the students are given project work in the evenings. This year, the students are going to be split in groups of 3-5 and the projects are going to be based on 3 industrial case studies from Boeing, Cloud Service Factory and SER&Practices. The groups will present their work on the last day of the school.
